Save A Sato is a non-profit organization dedicated to easing the suffering of Puerto Rico's homeless and abused animals. "Sato" is slang for street dog. We rescue Satos from the streets and beaches, give them medical care, food and shelter, and plenty of love. When they are healthy, we send them to one of our shelter partners for adoption into loving homes.
What a fun day at the shelter today, as Marianna from Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA came for a visit! Marianna visits the island a few times a year and always makes sure to stop in to meet the dogs at Save a Sato.
The dogs were more than happy to show off their personalities as they played, gave kisses and were most happy to be lap dogs!

We would not be able to continue our work without the support of our partner shelters in the states. We are so grateful to Marianna and Northeast for all their support of our program, they have been working with us since 1995!
Tails were wagging as the kennels were prepared at our shelter, Albergue de los Milagros in preparation for Quely, Pablo, Perla, Tuky, Selia, Gisela and Galilea to begin their journey to our partner shelter in Massachusetts and then on to thier forever homes.
Thanks to our volunteers - Gloria, Raquel, Marybel, Tanya and Lita for prepared the kennels and pups for their trip - here are scenes from the airport, the first step in each of these dogs journey to find the family they deserve.

Transports like this are only possible with passenger escorts, please share our passenger escort program with anyone you may know traveling from San Juan to MA, CT, NY or NJ. It is easy to be an escort and costs nothing for the passengers. Click here for the brochure in English or in Spanish.
All of these dogs will be available for adoption at our partner shelter - Worcester Animal Rescue League in Worcester, MA - http://www.worcester-arl.org/
Below is some information for temporary shelter of pets for people having to evacuate their homes due to the Gulf Refinery fires -
The School of Veterinary Doctors reminded authorities and residents required to evacuate their homes to include their animals in their plans of evacuation. In a press release, the School noted that no animal should be left in the middle of this dangerous emergency caused by the explosions of the gasoline tanks in the Gulf refinery in Cataño.
Suggestions for alternate shelter for animals include -
* Local Shelters
* Local Veterinary Clinics
* Friend or Relatives home
Prepare the basic necessities for the animal such as food, medicine, identification, contact information of the owners and certificate of vaccinations. Where space is available, veterinary doctors in the area will shelter the animals in their clinics.
For information and to coordinate the shelter of an animal at one of the veterinary clinics please contact the College of Veterinarians at 787-283-0565 or to 787-283-2840. cmvpr@cmvpr.org
The Center Animal Control of the Municipality of Carolina is also providing animal shelter for those affected by the explosion at the refinery. Tel 787-752-7272 or 787-752-7273
